On behalf of the Haiti relief effort I would like to offer a huge THANK YOU to the Empire Community! Last Friday, students and families raised a total of $4545.10!!!! The Canadian government has promised to match donations, bringing the total to over $9000 in one day's concerted effort! Thank you for your generosity in contributing to this very worthwhile cause. Following your example, Empire children are truly learning what it means to be a responsible and caring members of the global community.

Administrator’s Message
Happy New Year! We would like to welcome all our students and families back to school and invite everyone to share our commitment to making 2010 a great year !
We appreciate your open-hearted involvement in the activities of our school last month. Once again the Empire community donated generously to the Food Drive. We filled a truck with boxes of food to be delivered on the last day before the holidays!
The gym at Empire was packed for FOUR performances of our annual December concert, and the students loved the opportunity to show off their musical skills. Students were thrilled to be able to perform their dramatic and musical pieces to such a warmly appreciative audience!
Thanks to families for supporting your children in bringing reusable food containers this week and reminding them that waste-free or litter-less lunches are not just a one week affair. We hope they will have adopted some new waste reduction habits this week and will continue to apply them every day.
One of the most beautiful features of Empire School is its spacious playground. In the winter, the children have a delightful time frolicking in the ample snow, building snow sculptures and forts, and skating on the rink. They come inside rosy-cheeked, happy, and ready to settle to work. Unless it is raining or the temperature falls below –20 C., students will have the opportunity to play outdoors for twenty minutes during each nutrition break. Please ensure that your
child wears appropriate clothes for the weather conditions, including snow pants, hat and mittens, so that he or she can enjoy the outdoor play period to the fullest.
We look forward to seeing you at School Council on Tuesday and as you drop into the school over the winter term!
Ms. McCutcheon
Important Information
THE “EAT TO GIVE” PROGRAM IS BACK!
Empire School Council asks: Why not sign up for the Eat to Give program again this year and give
back to Empire Public School?
By buying your groceries or gas with gift cards instead of cash or debit, approximately 3% of your bill will be donated to Empire. The funds can really add up quickly if everyone makes even a small commitment! And if you already have an idea of what you spend on groceries every month, then there is very little effort required to make this fundraising a success!
Charity Services sponsors the Eat to Give program. You can find out more about the organization and the Eat to Give program by visiting the website: www.charityservices.ca.
To join, simply complete the online registration form available on the website to pre-order your gift cards for most of the major grocery stores and gas stations in both the KW area and across Canada. Stores that participate in this program include: Central Fresh Market, Food Basics, Zehrs, No Frills, Value Mart, Superstore, Sobey’s, Price Chopper, Metro, Shoppers Drug Mart, M&M Meats, Esso, Tim Horton’s, Canadian Tire, Petro Canada, Pioneer, Shell and Sunoco, to name a few. Relatives and friends across Canada can sign up and have their donation go to Empire School. It’s so easy!
If you do not have access to the internet, you can pick up an order form at the school office or stop by the information table at the Holiday concert on December 16 to pick up a form or get some additional information on how the program works.
Kisombe (Lwala)
Alyson Rowe from War Child Canada visited on December 2 to give us a progress report on the Congo School Rebuilding project. What an exciting assembly! The most significant piece of news is that the Lwala School has already been rebuilt by another charitable organization, so the money raised by the Empire community last year will go towards rebuilding a larger school in a more remote village in the Congo, named Kisombe. The total budget for rebuilding the Kisombe School is just over $30 000 and Empire is footing nearly the entire bill! We heard about how our actions are transforming the community. Building materials have been ordered, and adults have been hired to begin the construction. The wages they earn will put food on their tables. It was thrilling for our students to hear how the loonies and toonies they faithfully
donated last year are now being translated into wages and building supplies. We were also very proud to receive a certificate for having raised the most money of any school last year for War Child Canada. Check out our certificate in the front hallway and watch for ongoing updates of the rebuilding of the Kisombe School on the bulletin board outside the office.
